Trans Africa University College Not Accredited –NAB Boss

The National Accreditation Board (NAB) has stated that Trans Africa University College, an Accra-based tertiary institution, is not accredited to operate as a degree awarding college.

The Executive Secretary of NAB, Kwame Dartey, made this known recently in an interview with DAILY GUIDE.

According to him, Trans Africa University College has been accredited by NAB to run as a tutorial college and not as a degree awarding university as it is currently doing.

“Trans Africa has not been accredited as a university college. It is a tutorial college,” he told DAILY GUIDE.

“They are not supposed to be running degree programmes. NAB has not accredited Trans Africa University College,” he insisted, stating that it is yet to be affiliated to any university as a pre-condition for accreditation.

“You cannot admit students for a programme if you have not been accredited to do so,” he said.

He indicated that “We know that they are a tutorial college and that they are preparing students to stand for external exams.”

It would be recalled that DAILY GUIDE’s investigations, a couple of weeks ago, revealed that Trans Africa University College was operating as a degree awarding institution and charging foreign students huge sums of money per academic year, whereas it was only accredited to operate as a tutorial college to prepare students for external examinations.

Confession

When DAILY GUIDE contacted the Director of Trans Africa University College, Samuel Segbefia, at the time, he flatly dismissed the claim that the school has not been accredited to run any degree programme. He also dismissed the claim that the school has not completed its affiliation process with the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

However, Mr Dartey told DAILY GUIDE that Mr Segbefia had indeed admitted to him that Trans Africa University College was not accredited to operate as a university college.

Offence

It is a criminal offence under Article 24 of the NAB code for a learning institution to run a programme that it has not been accredited to run.

Poor Standards

According to Mr Dartey, an audit team from NAB which visited the college revealed that the school was not in the position to run degree programmes.

He stated that the physical structures of the school, among other things, were below standard and so the school couldn’t be given a university college status.

The school, according to him, does not also have adequate faculty members to run as a university college.

“I have always known the school as a tutorial college,” Mr Dartey stressed.

Petition

Mr Dartey has therefore urged students of Trans Africa University College offering degree programmes to petition NAB so that it can formally take the matter up and advise whether they should be sent to other universities to continue their studies or not.

“We are here to serve the public. We serve as quality control and ready to attend to public concerns. It is our duty to do it,” he said.

But until the students heed his call and lodge a formal complaint, operators of Trans Africa University College will be enriching themselves from unsuspecting students who come into the country to acquire university degrees.

Meanwhile, Dartey advised that students should at all times verify the validity of the accreditation period of their preferred institutions before applying.

Former Ghana President Jerry John Rawlings has praised Stephen Appiah for remaining humble despite his money and fame.

The former Juventus star paid a courtesy call on the former Head of State on Wednesday afternoon to officially hand him an invitation to his testimonial match.

The event organized by Primeval Media, scheduled to take place on June 27, is for the former Black Stars captain to bid his official farewell after announcing his retirement from the sport.

Former President Rawlings, after receiving his invitation to the testimonial match, praised the 34-year-old for remaining modest despite his fame and fortune.

“I feel indeed humbled, privileged and honoured for your visit here today,” ex President Rawlings said.

“You are one of the people that have enjoyed fame and fortune but you still have maintained your humility.”

Several top football stars are expected in Ghana for Appiah’s testimonial which will be preceded by a dinner on the eve of the match.

10 Chinese Caged

Ten Chinese illegal miners have appeared before an Accra circuit court for possessing eight pump action guns without authority.

They are Wei Hanwei, excavator engineer; Huang Huan Kao, mechanic; Meng Xing Gou, mechanic; Zhang Xiong Fei, engineer and Li Hia Jian, mechanic.

The others are He Shei Lin, engineer, Lu Shun Ming, Wei Guo Cai, Zhou Ping and Li Qichao, all mechanics.

The prosecution, led by ASP Stephen Adjei, averred that the accused persons on May 9, 2015 at Obuasi had in their possession eight pump action guns, one locally made pistol with four 38mm live ammunition, 21 9mm live ammunition and 198 cartridges without lawful authority.

Appearing before the court presided over by Justice Francis Obiri, the accused persons, speaking through an interpreter, denied the offense and were remanded into police custody.

Nasigri Seidu, counsel for the accused persons, applied for bail for all ten accused persons but the trial judge fixed May 18, 2015 to consider whether or not to grant the bail.

The facts of the case as presented by ASP Adjei are that following information received to the effect that some Chinese nationals were engaged in illegal mining at Obuasi and its environs, personnel from the National Operations Unit, led by C/ Supt Peter Ndekugri, mounted an operation which led to the arrest of the accused persons.

He said searches conducted on them revealed the aforestated items and four communication equipment.

Ama Busia Robbers Get 40 Years

Two young men suspected to be among a three-man gang that robbed Ama Brema Busia, a former Member of the Council of State, of various amounts of money were yesterday handed a total of 40 years’ imprisonment.

They are Godsway Nutakor aka Papisco, 25, former houseboy of the victim and Bright Asamoah aka Nana Yaw Asaase, 19, a carpenter.

The accused persons allegedly bolted to Nigeria where they were seeking refuge after Paul Afari, a 22-year-old carpenter and member of the gang who confessed to the robbery, had been jailed 25 years by the same court.

The two were alleged to have on March 22, 2015 at about 8am at Abelemkpe, a suburb of Accra, robbed the complainant of amounts of money in various currencies – $35,500; €3,000; £300 and GH¢25,000.

Making their first appearance in a court presided over by Justice Francis Obiri sitting with additional responsibility as a circuit court judge yesterday, the accused persons admitted the charges of conspiracy and robbery.

They were accordingly convicted on their pleas.

Justice Obiri accordingly sentenced Godsway and Bright to 20 years for the charge of conspiracy and 20 years for robbery, to run concurrently.

The prosecution had said that Godsway was a former house help to Madam Ama Busia and that on the said date the complainant left home to attend church service at Calvary Methodist, Adabraka in Accra, leaving behind three of her house helps.

The prosecutor said soon after she had left, the houseboy, one Simon Tawiah, heard a knock at the main gate and he met Paul and Bright standing there.

He said the accused person forcibly opened the door to the woman’s bedroom with a pinch bar and hammer, opened her metal safe and eventually made away with the afore-stated monies.

Ministers Booted Out Of ‘Job 600’

The Majority Leader of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has revealed to DAILY GUIDE that ministers and deputy ministers who are also Members of Parliament will not be given offices in the popular ‘Job 600′.

Speaking in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, the Majority Leader, who is also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Nadowli/Kaleo, said that office spaces in the refurbished ‘Job 600′ which are to be used by MPs are 252 and that the current number of MPs is 275 and so the leadership has decided to exclude ministers and deputy ministers.

According to him, all ministers and deputy ministers have official offices and so it will not be fair for them to have additional offices in the new ‘Job 600′ while other MPs who are not part of the executive struggle to find space to work.

“We expect the ministers and the deputy ministers to use their official offices for all other duties including parliamentary ones because other MPs who are solely legislators may find it difficult to get places to discharge their parliamentary duties.”

He explained that the current number of ministers and deputy ministers who are MPs is 45 and so by calculation the rest of the 230 MPs will have fully furnished offices to operate from and also receive their visitors.

The Majority Leader told DAILY GUIDE that a comprehensive programme has been put in place for the MPs and some other staff of the parliamentary service to move into the new offices in phases.

“We have programmed that majority of the MPs will move into their new offices by the end of this month; and by the end of June, all MPs and other staff would have moved into the new offices to work.”

According to Hon Bagbin, the leadership has given itself that ample time for complete transition to ensure that all facilities and data are safe and secure.

“The NDC government has provided these new offices to enable MPs work effectively and also improve productivity in the House,” he said.

In terms of security at the facility, the Majority Leader said an effective physical and technical system of processing all guests visiting MPs has been put in place to ensure orderliness and safety at the place.

Immediately after Tuesday’s sitting, the Majority Leader and other members of the leadership held a meeting to allocate offices to all the eligible 230 MPs.

The new office complex has facilities such as clinic, library, restaurant, ICT centre, auditoriums, gym, mosque, church and a press conference centre.

The erstwhile Kufuor government awarded the contract for the project at the cost of $25 million but DAILY GUIDE’s investigations show that about $100 million has so far been pumped into the project, including a recent loan of $24.5 for the furnishing of the offices.

Speaker Edward Doe Adjaho, on Tuesday when Parliament reconvened for the second meeting of the third session of the Sixth Parliament, told the MPs that the offices were ready.

With the above arrangement, it is not clear whether the ministers or deputy ministers who are MPs will be allocated offices should any of them be relieved of his or her ministerial position and how this will be done.

Pastor Adusah To Be Freed

The Attorney-General (A-G) Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong, has said that the state does not have enough evidence for the trial of the United Kingdom-based Ghanaian pastor, Eric Isaiah Adusah, accused of killing his British wife.

The position of the A-G followsan autopsy report on the deceased, Charmaine Speirs, from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, dated March 31, 2015 and signed by Dr. Afua Darkwah Abrahams. It indicates that the pastor’s wife died of “acute poising and opiate heroin” overdose, a banned narcotic substance.

Pastor Adusah of the Global Light Revival Ministries is being tried over the death of his pregnant wife, Mrs. Speirs, between 18 and 20 March, 2015 at Mac Dic Royal Plaza Hotel in Koforidua, Eastern Region.

Charged with murder contrary to Section 46 of Act 29 of 1960, the plea of the accused person has not been taken by the court.

However, at yesterday’s sitting at the Accra central magistrate court presided over by Ms. Marian Affoh, the A-G in a seven-page advice on the case docket dated May 3, 2015 and signed by Evelyn D. Keelson, sought to clear the accused person.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector K. Sanche, who read the concluding part of the advice said, “…As already stated, even though we find some aspects of his behaviour suspicious, we cannot at this stage have sufficient evidence to hold him liable for the death of the deceased.”

He further told the court that the A-G had also advised that Pastor Adusah be granted bail.

“We therefore advise that he is granted bail; he should however continue to assist the police in conducting further investigations into the case,” he stated.

Ms Eva Otchere, who had at the previous sitting complained about delays in getting the advice of the A-G on the case, said she had already filed for bail at the high court.

The case has been adjourned to May 28, 2015.

In February this year, the woman was to travel to Ghana together with her husband but came ahead of him and stayed with Bishop Yaw Adu, the spiritual father of the accused, in Koforidua.

The police said in the first week of March 2015, Pastor Adusah also arrived in the country and on March 16, the couple lodged at the said hotel.

According to Detective Inspector Agbemehia, in the early hours of March 18, 2015, the accused checked out and traveled to the UK while the wife was billed to check out on March 20, 2015.

He said at the front desk of the hotel, Pastor Adusah had allegedly instructed the management not to disturb the deceased because she was observing fasting and prayers in her room and needed a quiet time until she checked out on Friday, March 20.

The police officer said on the due date Ms Speirs was expected to check out, but nothing was heard of her so the management of the hotel used a spare key to gain access into the room but found the British woman’s lifeless body in a bathtub with blood oozing from her nose and in a state of decomposition.
