East Legon Café Robbers Nabbed

The suspects

Six suspected armed robbers alleged to have attacked an internet café and some students of Islamic University College, robbing them of monies and various items, have been apprehended.

The suspects are Amewugah Kumafu aka Hugah, 18; Akwesi Aikins, 18; Richard Tenyuie, 20; Hamza Aziz, 26; Richard Korley aka Sapele, 22; and Anthony Galley aka Rasta, 23.

Items robbed included mobile phones, laptops and an unspecified amount of money.

Briefing the media in Accra, ACP Timothy Yoosa Bonga, the deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, said the six on April 15, 2015, armed with cutlasses and a single barrel gun, stormed a café at East Legon and held the victims hostage.

The suspects then collected the mobile phones of customers at the café and robbed the operator of an amount of GH¢1,200.

Not satisfied, the robbers pushed the café operator on the ground and stabbed his left shoulder with a dagger before escaping with their booty.

The armed men then went on to attack some students of Islamic University in their hostel, robbing them of their monies and mobile phones.

On April 16, 2015, around 1:30am, a security man spotted one of the suspects scaling a fenced wall of a house and raised an alarm, leading to his arrest.

He was identified as one of the robbers who attacked and robbed the people in the café the previous day.

Upon a search by the police, four mobile phones and SIM cards belonging to victims were found in his pocket.

The suspect then led police to apprehend the other accomplices from their hideouts.

All the suspects were identified when the police invited victims of the robbery attacks to identify them.

Suspects Senyo and Moses, also accomplices mentioned by the arrested suspects, are currently on the run and efforts are being made to apprehend them.
