A-26-year old Nigerian who attempted to export 26 parcels of wee stashed in 15 pillows to Nigeria has been jailed for 10 years by an Accra circuit court.
The convict, Ngochikwu Adubuzu, businessman, was charged for exporting narcotic drugs contrary to Section 56 (c) sub-section 1(1) of the Narcotic Drug, Control Enforcement and Sanction Act of 1990.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Oppong, averred that the accused on April 27, 2015 at the ABC lorry park in Accra, had in his possession 26 parcels of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp (wee).
Appearing before a court presided over by Justice Francis Obiri, Adubuzu pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge.
Explaining, he said he was sent to Ghana for the substance by someone he simply called Chief.
He said he bought the substance at GH¢60 a parcel from Wa to be exported to Nigeria.
However, the trial judge said the explanation was an admission of guilt by the accused and proceeded to convict him.
In sentencing Adubuzu, Justice Obiri said the accused, who is a first offender, had shown remorse and had not wasted the time of the court.
Justice Obiri handed him the 10-year jail term and ordered the Ministry of Interior to take the necessary steps to deport him after serving his term in Ghana.
Earlier, Chief Insp. Oppong had suggested a 20-year jail term for the accused, noting that the country had been used as a transit point for the exportation of such drugs.
This development, he indicated, had marred the hard won reputation of Ghana.
But George Asamaney, counsel for Adubuzu, who entered the case pro bono, pleaded for leniency for the accused.
