POTAG General Secretary and President addressing the press.
THE POLYTECHNIC Teachers’ Association of Ghana (POTAG) has called on government to, as a matter of urgency, pay the 2014/2015 Book and Research (B&R) Allowances to prevent a recurrence of last academic year’s experiences in the country’s polytechnics.
In a communiqué issued last Thursday in Sunyani after a national congress, POTAG called on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to re-open negotiations on their conditions of service.
The statement jointly singed by POTAG General Secretary, Ibrahim Adamu and the President, Francis Dugrah, further noted that the Association was aware of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was signed between POTAG and the government before the payment of the 2013/2014 B&R Allowances.
The statement said it was never agreed that the B&R Allowances be scrapped, indicating that until new conditions of service were agreed upon between the parties, the old conditions of service ought to continue as per Section 107(3) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
“It should also be noted that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission engaged POTAG on two occasions concerning the negotiation on the conditions of service. Since the last meeting on January 28, 2015, all attempts to get FWSC to continue negotiations have failed,” the statement said.
It would be recalled that POTAG members embarked on an indefinite strike action last year over their book and research allowances and almost disrupted the entire academic calendar when all the ten polytechnics in the country had to be closed.
POTAG called off the strike following government’s promise to pay the allowances. But government, according to POTAG, is again dragging its feet to effect the payment of the B&R Allowances.
