ROYAL SPARROWS Band has received 550 white canes through an appeal made on Adom FM and has consequently donated them to some blind groups in the country.

Making a presentation of 50 of such white canes to the Greater Accra Regional branch of Ghana Blind Union in Accra on Tuesday, leader of the band, Charles Oppong, said the donation was to help members of the association lead normal lives as blind people with the help of the white canes.

According to Mr Oppong, 50 of the canes would be given to students of Akuapem School for the Blind, while 150 would be distributed to blind students at Okuapemman Senior High School at Akropong, Presbyterian College of Education at Akropong, University of Cape Coast, Ghana National College in Cape Coast and Mawuli Senior High School in Ho, and the rest would be given to other blind people across the country.

He said members of Royal Sparrows Band, formed by Rev Yaw Owusu-Ansah of Adom FM fame, have been engaging in commercial activities to raise funds to look after their children and family members as well as other blind people who do not have people to take of them.

According to him, some individual people have also been assisting the group who also in turn assist their fellow blind people.

“As a talented  blind band, we want to appeal to all individuals who want to hire live band at the weddings, birthday parties, outdoorings, funerals and crusades to come and hire our services and see what God can do through us,”  leader of the band said, stressing people can contact them on 0243 715836 or 0277 617309.

He also appealed to members of the public who want to assist them with money to make such donations through their bank account number 1051000077275001, Royal Sparrows Band, Agricultural Development Bank at Kaneshie.

The Regional Chairman of the Greater Accra branch of the Ghana Blind Union, Mr George Abelse, who received the white canes on behalf of his colleagues, thanked the Royal Sparrows Band for their gesture.
