Eric Opoku, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister
Calm has returned to Sankore in the Asunafo South District of the Brong-Ahafo Region after Monday’s bloody clash between die-hard supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Patrick Adusei-Sarpong, confirmed to DAILY GUIDE yesterday that normalcy had returned to the town following the swift intervention of the security agencies.
ACP Adusei-Sarpong, who visited the town on Wednesday, hinted that five people who were suspected to have led the attack were on the police wanted list and currently being pursued. No arrests had been made as at press time yesterday.
Reports indicated that most of the youth had fled the town for fear of being arrested by the police.
Last Monday, supporters of the two major political parties attacked each other with clubs and machetes, resulting in the injury of one Kwame Fosu, 27, aka Kwame Macho, an NDC member.
Earlier, some NDC thugs had allegedly attacked some NPP supporters; and according to some NPP officials, the lack of action by the police also compelled their supporters of the party to stage a reprisal attack, which led to the near bloody clash.
The development led the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to deploy a combined team of heavily armed police and military personnel to the town.
ACP Adusei-Sarpong advised the youth of Sankore not to allow themselves to be used by people, especially politicians, to do dirty jobs for them in their quest to attain or consolidate power.
He urged them to use their youthful energies for useful ventures that would profit them and their community.
The police chief therefore appealed to the chiefs and the political leaders in the area to sit up and ensure peace in the community, noting that Sankore was gaining notoriety of being a hub of violence in the region.
Not long ago, an alleged hoodlum of the NDC, Kwasi Adu, who allegedly killed a Deeper Life pastor in the area, nearly chopped off the neck of an NPP steward on the streets of the town in the full glare of the residents, but still walks as a free man.
According to the NPP officials, most of the NDC defectors had become targets of NDC attacks, while others had been wrongfully linked to some crime and thereby placed under police wanted list just to get rid of them.
