A select side from Aboabo Number One lifted the May 9 trophy and a cash prize of GH¢1000 after triumphing 5-3 on penalties against Aboabo Number 2 during Saturday’s grand finale of the 2015 May 9 Football Gala in Kumasi.

The football contest, held in honour of the 126 soccer fans that died during a Kotoko/Hearts football match on May 9, 2001, was played at the Aboabo Middle ‘B’ Park with participating teams from the Zongo areas in Kumasi.

Mr. Herbert Mensah, ex-Kotoko CEO, decided to organize the football gala, ostensibly to make sure that victims of the May 9 disaster are remembered and honoured even 14 years after they sadly kicked the bucket.

Aboabo Number 2, who placed second, took home a cash prize of GH¢500, as the third and fourth placed teams took home GH¢300 and GH¢200 respectively. The best player, goal king and best goalkeeper took home a mobile phone each.

Family members of some of the May 9 victims in Kumasi were at the venue to watch the exciting gala. Chiefs and opinion leaders in the Zongo communities were also there to make the gala grand.

Meanwhile, Herbert Mensah, as part of this year’s May 9 celebration, visited the Central Mosque in Kumasi where prayers were said for victims of the May 9 disaster on Friday.

The ex-Kotoko capo climaxed the activities marking the event by donating different varieties of drinks and food items including bags of rice to families of the victims in Kumasi.
