‘Dumsor’ Forces GBC To Cut Transmission Hours

State-owned broadcaster GBC is cutting down on transmission hours due to the high cost in buying fuel to run generators as a result of the erratic power supply.

According to GBC officials, the broadcaster needs to save to continue to be in business and will no longer run 24 hours including its news and sports channels on the digital platforms.

The director general of GBC Major Albert B. Don-Chebe (rtd) confirmed to Joy FM, but denied reports that staff will be laid off.

He said GTV and its subsidiaries will now end transmission at 12:00am and resume at 4:00am.

The John Mahama-led administration is hoping to take delivery of two power barges in September 2015 and January 2016 to fix the erratic power supply – a problem that has existed for three years.

Ghana is currently shedding between 400 and 700 Megawatts of power between off-peak and peak times, respectively. The situation has led to job cuts, high expenditure, among others.

Three popular Ghanaian screen icons – Yvonne Nelson, Sarkodie and Lydia Forson – are championing a vigil to put pressure on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to solve the crisis.

The vigil dubbed #dumsormuststop is expected to come off May 16.
