Ghana Youth for Sanitation has presented 200 school bags made with waste sachets to the Paramount Queen Mother of Sunyani Traditional area, Nana Yaa Nyamaa II, for distribution to the various orphanages in the municipality.

The organisation also donated a number of handbags and raincoats, all made from waste sachets, to female teachers and night watchmen of the beneficiary orphanages.

Ghana Youth for Sanitation, based in Sunyani, which is into waste management and sanitation, has found innovative ways to turn water sachets into useful products. It uses waste sachets to produce items like school bags, shopping bags, raincoats, waste bins and tarpaulin, among others, aimed at improving sanitation and lives of Ghanaians.

So far, it has donated 50 pieces of its waste bins to the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to be placed at vantage points in the municipality to improve sanitation in the city.

Presenting the school bags during the launch of the 60th birthday celebration of the Paramount Queen Mother, the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Youth for Sanitation, Mariama Iddrisu, said the gesture was to support Nana Yaa Nyamaa’s objective of visiting needy institutions in the municipality.

She stated that improving environmental sanitation can bring tremendous benefits to the country in the areas of job creation, tourism, environmental sustainability and an increased productivity, saying, “It is in the light of this that we have formed the Ghana Youth for Sanitation.”

She explained to DAILY GUIDE that her organisation has taken it upon themselves to meet various groups including churches, keep fit clubs and schools to educate them on the need to avoid littering the environment and how best to manage waste.
