ANGRY TRADERS and Transport Union operators, once again, kicked against the proposed Kejetia Bus Terminal construction works on Monday morning, leaving doubts as to whether the much-talked-about project will ever take place.

Wearing red and black attire to show their fury, the aggrieved traders and transport union operators, accused the KMA of extortion and other wild charges concerning the registration of traders for relocation to kick-start the project.

The traders stated categorically that they have lost trust in KMA’s ability to ensure the smooth start of the project and have therefore appealed to President Mahama to set up an independent committee to handle the Kejetia issues.

“We humbly demand the immediate intervention of the government to ensure the proper implementation of things to keep sleeping dogs asleep,” Andrews Kwofie, PRO, Kejetia Traders Association pointed out, drawing wild cheers from the gathering.

He was speaking when the leadership of the Transport Unions, Petty Traders and Kejetia Traders Association, organized a mammoth press conference at Kejetia on Monday morning. The entire terminal was virtually declared a holiday to pave way for the press briefing.

He stated that the traders and transport unions have been accused wrongly by the KMA for objecting to the development of Kumasi, stressing that the traders were fully in support of the reconstruction of Kejetia so the public should disregard the KMA’s accusations.

“We stand for development, obedience to law and order and unblemished implementation of any national project devoid of any form of ambiguity,” Mr. Kwofie cleared the air.

He however explained that the traders and drivers’ unions seemed to have kicked against the Kejetia project so far because Kojo Bonsu, the KMA Boss, has not been truthful and open to the traders ever since the plan to reconstruct Kejetia started.

Mr. Kwofie also enumerated five disturbing actions so far taken by the KMA in recent times which had angered the traders and driver unions more, to once again kick against the proposed reconstruction works.

He alleged that the registration team formed by KMA to register the traders with regards to their relocation for works to start “sometimes demand monies from some vulnerable petty traders.”

Mr. Kwoffie said the KMA was also registering their cronies instead of the traders at Kejetia, pointing out that the registration taking place is based on discrimination, nepotism and “sometimes the number of tickets one has been issued with as one’s contribution to the revenue base of KMA within one month.”

He said so far the petty traders have been thrown into a state of limbo with regards to where they would be relocated as the KMA was, so far, only dealing with the transport unions.

Mr. Kwofie also accused the KMA of registering only traders that are in possession of ID Cards that the KMA issued to the petty traders at the cost of GH 200, slamming Kojo Bonsu for not considering the interest of the petty traders.

Nana Prempeh, President, Kejetia Petty Traders Association, stated that they were not doing the bidding of any political party, explaining that they were just fighting for their rights as Ghanaians.
