The Tarkwa circuit court in the Western Region, presided over by Obeng Asante, has jailed Faustina Arthur, 28, for stealing a baby girl at Wasa Akropong in the region.
The convict, popularly known as Yaa Yaa, pleaded guilty to child stealing and alleged that she committed the offence because she admired the baby girl.
Giving the facts of the case, Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the court that the complainant, Charity Owusu Ansah, is a seamstress apprentice at Wasa Akropong. He indicated that the accused was a resident of Adukwa near Wasa Appiah Nkwanta. He asserted that on April 30, this year, the complainant visited her husband in his store at Wasa Akropong with her baby girl and gave the baby to one Simon Addo, a younger brother of the husband, who was also sitting in the store.
According to the complainant, she asked Simon to take care of the baby while she went to purchase some items from the market. The prosecutor said the convict, who was sitting in front of the store, opted to voluntarily take care of the baby and the complainant left the little girl in her (Faustina Arthur’s) care.
The prosecutor said thirty minutes later, when the complainant returned from the market the convict and her baby could not be found.
He said the complainant made a report to the Wasa Akropong police but they (police) could not trace the woman. On May 5, 2015, investigations led the police to Adukwa and found the three-month-old baby with the Yaa Yaa. She was arrested, charged with stealing a baby and put before court.
