Dr Ahmed laying a wreath on the Ministry’s behalf
Youth and Sports Minister, Dr Mustapha Ahmed, has charged the leadership of the various supporter groups in the country to educate their fans on crowd violence.
He pointed out that his outfit had rolled out educational programs for soccer fans to ensure that what happened in 2001 in a game involving Hearts and Kotoko would never rear its ugly head again.
“We would like to plead with the various leaders of the supporter groups to educate their members in handling disagreements.
“They should follow laid-down procedures and instructions at public functions. We are here today to mark the 14th anniversary of those who lost their lives on that fateful Wednesday. It should serve as a constant reminder for our actions and inactions.
“The various groups should constantly liaise with the Ministry to ensure that what happened 14 years ago doesn’t happen again.”
A brief presentation by officials of the Ghana Red Cross Association, St John Ambulance Service, on safety at the stadium as well as updates on the welfare fund operated by a Board of Trustees for the May 9 victims, preceded the wreath-laying by representatives of various groups.
