 Naba Raymond Alafia Abilba IV

The fears of many residents of the Bolgatanga municipality were allayed when a grand ceremony organised to welcome Naba Joseph Rodricks Apakre Nyaaba to the municipality as the Bolga Naba did not turn violent.

The anxiety of the residents followed an earlier enskinment of Naba Raymond Alafia Abilba IV on Friday for the same position.

At the time of filing this report yesterday, the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga, was still peaceful, with security personnel stationed at some vantage points in the area to maintain peace.

The colourful ceremony on Saturday afternoon attracted many residents of all age brackets to Atulbabisi, a suburb of Bolga.

Naba Joseph Rodricks Apakre Nyaaba, 35, was enskinned the Paramount Chief of the Bolgatanga Traditional Area on May 6, 2015 at Nalerigu in the Northern Region by the Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, Nayiri Naa Bohagu Mahamin Abdulai Sheriga.

Naba Joseph Rodricks Apakre Nyaaba, now bearing the traditional name, Naba Abeka Nonge Buuri Maltinga, per the grand welcome by the large crowd on Saturday and the performance of rites by the royal families, has assumed his position as the Bolga Naba.

Before his arrival on Saturday, another grand ceremony had been held on Friday to enskin Naba Raymond Alafia Abilba IV as the Paramount Chief of the Bolgatanga Traditional Area. This had also attracted a large crowd including divisional and sub-divisional chiefs, some paramount chiefs from the Northern and Upper West Regions and a delegation from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Missing at the two enskinment ceremonies were the leadership and members of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs and the political leadership of the region.

Before the enskinment of the two “paramount chiefs”, there had been misunderstandings over the royal history and the enskinning authority for the Bolga Traditional Area.

However, one fact that has not been contested by any of the royal families is the number of royal families in the Bolgatanga Traditional Area—namely, Apaseyelum, Agandaa, Akumbosco, Agawure, Atulba-Tia, Agbere and Adogma-Baa—and the roles they play in the selection of a paramount chief.

What is still being contested is the enskinning authority for the Bolgatanga paramount skin and that is what might have resulted in Bolgatanga having two royals being enskinned as chiefs.

Per the situation on the ground, it can be said that Bolgatanga has two paramount chiefs who live about 500 meters apart.
