Madam Gabiana Agbanwa
Chairman of the Vetting Committee of the New Patriotic Party in the Upper East Region, Bombande Edmond, has told DAILY GUIDE that the exercise was peaceful as expected and looked forward to clean campaigns when the aspirants are finally cleared to contest.
With the exception of the former Asante Kotoko Football Club’s spokesperson, Listowel Yesu Bukarson, who spent over one-and-a-half hours clearing some allegations brought against him, almost all the aspirants answered their questions within one hour, which party supporters considered appropriate.
In all, 13 out of the 15 constituencies in the region produced a total of 24 aspirants for the vetting. The two constituencies that missed out were Talensi and Pusiga because there were no aspirants to be vetted.
Aspirants from Garu, Tempane, Bongo, Bolgatanga East and Zebilla constituencies were going to their respective primaries unopposed, while eight constituencies, made up of Builsa North, Builsa South, Bawku Central, Nabdam, Navrongo Central, Binduri, Bolgatanga Central and Chiana-Paga, are likely to witness fierce contests.
The usual contesters for Navrongo Central, Joseph Kofi Adda and Alhaji Abdallah Otito Achuluwor, will be facing each other again. In the Chiana-Paga constituency MP Leo Kaba will be competing with his usual contender, Clement Dandori, and a new entrant, Solomon Abotiba.
The Member of Parliament for Nabdam constituency, Boniface Gambila, will be challenged by Yin Sapakin. In Builsa North, former Member of Parliament, Agnes Asangalisa Chigabitia, will not contest the primaries, leaving the stage for former District Chief Executive, Thomas Alonsi and Listowel Yesu Bukarson to slug it out.
Bolgatanga Central constituency primaries is one that will generate a lot of heat when Rex Asanga, a development worker, Agana Bawa Rasheed, a media practitioner and Joseph Atura, start talking to delegates for votes.
In Binduri the former Member of Parliament, Stephen Yakubu aka Burger, and the former Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Abdulai Abanga, will reenact the April 2011 primaries. Builsa South will see Daniel K. Akaadobli locking horns with Daniel K. Gariba at Fumbisi, the constituency capital.
Bawku Central is the only constituency with a woman participating in the primaries. Madam Gabiana Agbanwa, a health worker, will once again face Haruna Alhassan, former MD of Metro TV. The aspirant in the Bawku Central primaries is Abukari Jebril aka All Stars.
The balloting for positions on the ballot paper is expected to be done on Saturday, May 9, 2015.
